John Lewis Gilchrist was born August 9, 1946. He was the son of the late Thomas Gilchrist and Amanda Wash Gilchrist of Johnston, SC. He entered into holy rest on August28, 2026 after an extended illness at the Edgefield Post Acute, Edgefield, SC.
At an early age he accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of his life and joined China Grove Baptist Church.
John L. as he was affectionately known, was educated in the Edgefield County School Systems (attending WE Parker colored School).
Following school, he moved to Washington, DC and lived there for 35 years before answering the call to move back home.
John L. worked hard to support his family. He was employed as a landscaper for 25 years. .
John L. loved his family without condition, always putting their needs before his own
John L. was preceded in death by a son, Donnell Carroll, his parents six sisters and four brothers and other dear family members.
John L. leaves to love honor and cherish his passing, a son: Thomas Carroll, a daughter-in-law, Teresa Carroll, grandchildren, Douglas Staley, Demarcus Staley, Darnell Carroll, Jr, and Tiffany Carroll; two sisters, Claudia Lawton (Garcia), Beech Island, SC and Doris Gilchrist; twelve great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
